Is Your Relationship with God a Spiritual "Side Hustle?"
Having a side job in addition to your primary job to supplement your income is nothing new. The practice has been called having a "side gig," or "moonlighting if done after one's daytime job. In recent years, "having a side hustle" has been the darling phrase of the internet and social media.
Having a side relationship with God, a spiritual "side hustle," is also not new. We all, at one time or another (honestly, many times) act as if having a relationship with God, the creator and sustainer of all that exists, is simply something to supplement what's really important to us.
We go about our days earning a living, interacting with family and friends, engaging in hobbies and leisure activities, and trying to maintain a healthy diet and exercise. All these things are good.
But when these activities become the main focus of our lives, at the expense of spending time with God, we make our spiritual life an expendable "side hustle."
This Is Not a Good Idea!
There are many reasons why this is not a good idea. If you've had even a minimal amount of exposure to the Bible and a religious education of any sort, including some form of Sunday school, you know the reasons. Worth repeating? Yes, but not here.
There are many ways we can change our focus to make our spiritual life our "primary job." Once again, you know the ways, even if you've stayed awake for a sermon or two over the years.
So, what's next? More importantly, what's first?
A Better Way to Start Your Day
I submit the first thing you and I need to do every morning is raise our hands, hearts, and souls pleading with God to give us an insatiable desire to desire as our "primary job," an intimate relationship with Him. If we sincerely make this request, the Almighty will help each of us discover our unique way to know, love, and serve Him.
If you are a Christian, like myself, you have the added blessing to have the Holy Spirit at your disposal, who will light a fire in your soul, and set aflame your desire to know, love and serve the Father and His son, Jesus Christ.
"And God spoke all these words: 'I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.'" (Exodus 20:1-3)
"Jesus said to him, 'Away from me, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’" (Matthew 4:10)
"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks." (John 4:23)
